Territorial Expansion: Opposing Outlooks on Personal Liberty and Economic Freedom
As people from both the North and South migrated west, they carried two radically different perspectives on freedom. People in the North tended to favor ideas of personal liberty while people in the South favored strong views on economic freedom. Therefore, people from the North generally were against slavery as an oppression of freedom, and people from the South generally viewed slavery as an expression of economic freedom. Both Northerners and Southerners wanted to see their ideas of freedom transmitted into the newly acquired territories. The start of the Civil War began as much in the West as it did in the East.
